On November 25th Edinburgh-based tidal energy technology developer Sustainable Marine Energy (SME) completed the installation of its game changing PLAT-I tidal energy system at Connel, near Oban on the west coast of Scotland.

Over the past few weeks the SME team has been busy assembling the PLAT-I platform at Dunstaffnage Marina only 1.5 miles from teh installation site. Following the installation of the drilled rock anchors and mooring system earlier in the month, the platform was towed to site by the Green Isle multicat and connected to the moorings in an operation that took a little under 5 hours.

Now all that remains is for the team from SME and SCHOTTEL HYDRO to commission the turbines and power control equipment, which is expected to take up to two weeks. Once this is achieved the platform will be generating electricity, accumilating operating hours on the turbines and the load monitoring of the platform structure and mooring system.

The video below is a timlapse of the installation day, and the following day's commissioning activities.
