Chris Burden

Principal Naval Architect

A typical day at work involves…

A bit of everything... some design work from concept to detailed design, focusing predominantly on the Naval Architecture side. Also a little costing, planning and procurement with some involvement on the shop floor with production/fabrication.

I learnt my trade by…

A life of messing around on boats! I qualified from Newcastle University with first class honours in Naval Architecture. Since then I've had five years in the Defence sector working with surface combatants and submarines in all aspects of Naval Architecture and two years in the offshore oil and gas and marine renewables sector; focusing mainly on hydrodynamics of offshore structures.

What's the best thing about working for SME?

My colleagues, variety of the role, being busy and being involved in real engineering.

How do you relax at the end of the day?

The RIB ride home across the Solent helps you to wind down especially when the weather is nice. A beer has been known to help in the past as well!
